Windows XP File Sharing Prep

The purpose of this article is to provide some guidance for users having trouble mounting a CIFS or SMBFS share from a Windows XP computer.


In order to mount a CIFS/SMBFS share in Windows XP, the network interface must be configured with the following protocols:

  • File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks
  • Client for Microsoft Networks

This can easily be accomplish this through navigating the network setup wizard:

  1. Open "My Network Places"
  2. Under "Network Tasks"
    1. Select the option to configure a home or office network (not wireless)

Any CIFS share should now be available through the normal means.
